Park name proposal to honour family

A local family who has lived at Burpengary East for more than a century may be honoured with a park in Briston Ave named in their memory.

Moreton Bay City Council is proposing to recognise the Scudamore family’s contribution to the community and their historic connections to Burpengary East by naming the currently unnamed park after them.

Moreton Bay City Council Mayor Peter Flannery says naming a park, located on what was historically their land, is a small way council can recognise the family.

“The family have been in Burpengary since 1917 and farmed the land that the park now sits on for over 40 years,” Mayor Flannery explains.

“Over that time, the family members have been active community members and volunteers, bringing great value and community spirit to Burpengary, Deception Bay and surrounds.”

Councillor Mark Booth (Div 2) says it is important to acknowledge the contributions of residents in a localised way.

“Over their 106 years in the area, the family has given back in so many ways and this park naming acknowledges both their great community spirit and their historical connection to Moreton Bay,” Cr Booth says.

“Most recently, before their passing in 2022, Brian and Isabella Scudamore were active members of the Deception Bay Progress Association, with Brian being Vice President for several years.

“Brian was also a volunteer who helped to establish the Deception Bay Auxiliary Fire Station.”

The parkland at 41-47 Briston Ave is proposed to be called ‘Scudamore Park’.

Moreton Bay City Council will now seek public feedback on the proposal until September 18.

The proposal will only be brought back to council for reconsideration if non-supportive submissions are received.
