Performing robots make show debut

Hi-tech robots will make their first appearance at the historic Redcliffe Show this year.

A humanoid and robotic dog will be the major attractions on opening day (June 26) at Redcliffe Showgrounds.

Operated by UniSC staff, the robots will perform and show how they can be used to herd/round-up farm animals.

Redcliffe Show Vice President Barbara Mapp was “mesmerised” when she first saw a display by the robots.

“I’ve been associated with the Redcliffe Show for many many years (secretary 40 years),” she said, “and you have to keep up with the times.

“This is modern life. This is the future. We were delighted when they (UniSC) said they’d be happy to come to the show.”

A UniSC spokesperson said the robotic dogs will help herd animals (ducks) as part of a hands-on farming demonstration.

“The live shows will explain how robots can assist farmers and animals, using smart technology in safe and innovative ways,” the spokesperson said.

“Visitors will hear about the “Herding in a Box” project and see how students are teaching the robotic dog to respond to voice commands, just like a working farm dog.

“It’s a great chance for kids to see science and technology come to life, ask questions, and discover how robotics is shaping the future of farming in a fun and easy-to-understand way."

Sheep-herding “dogs” formed part of students’ mechatronics engineering project, which included programming the robots.

The 78th Redcliffe Show is on June 26-28 at Redcliffe Showgrounds. Gates open 8.30am all three days.
