Moreton Bay’s pet owners are being urged to desex pets before they become “humpy doodles”.
RSPCA Queensland has put a cheeky spin on a serious animal welfare issue, to promote its 2026 Desex My Pet campaign.
The organisation’s three-month (June 1-August 31) drive aims to help owners prevent unwanted litters, reduce problem behaviours and save on desexing costs.
Participating veterinary practices will offer pet owners a 20 per cent discount on dog and cat desexing through the RSPCA’s Desex My Pet initiative.
Last year more than 1300 Moreton Bay owners registered 1115 dogs and 441 cats for the discount.
Twelve months ago 13 Moreton Bay vets participated. In 2026, there are 15 on board and more than 150 across Queensland.
RSPCA Queensland Vet Dr Anne Chester said the humorous approach was designed to grab attention, but the message is important.
“Anyone who has had a dog mount everything in sight, or a cat yowl through the night, knows these behaviours can be stressful and embarrassing for owners,” Dr Chester said.
“But beyond the awkward moments, desexing plays a really important role in protecting pets and preventing unwanted litters.
“When we see female dogs suffering from life-threatening conditions like pyometra and thousands of cats entering shelters every year.
“It is heartbreaking to know many of these cases could have been prevented through desexing.”
Some of the benefits associated with desexing your pet include:
Reduces their desire to roam;
Allows your pet to be happier and healthier;
No risk of unwanted litters;
Cheaper council registration fees;
Reduces the risk of some cancers;
Reduces aggressive behaviours in dogs;
Reduces behaviours such as urine spraying in cats.
Pet owners can register on the desex my pet website for their 20 per cent off desexing voucher to provide at participating vets.
