Photo gallery: Characters come to life for Book Week

A passion for books was on show at Story House Early Learning Centre, Deception Bay, during their Book Week parade yesterday.

Parents outdid themselves in creating costumes this year, with many handmade.

There were hungry caterpillars, aliens, witches, fairies and princesses roaming around during the small parade, with loads of fun activities afterwards.

Story House Early Learning Centre Deception Bay Service Manager Chay Slattery says this year’s Book Week is more important than others.

“We are really pushing authors and the importance of early years literacy and literature with the children this year,” Chay says.

“We use books such as (The) Colour Monster to help support children in self-regulating their emotions. Instead of a child breaking things or hurting others, they now let one of our staff know that they’re feeling like the ‘red monster’ and need a break.

“We hold an annual book parade to help the children in our care find inspiration and support within books, while linking it back to their own interests.”
