Plans for key infrastructure and bushfire areas in Morayfield South will be sent to the State Government approval.

Council is seeking Ministerial backing for an amendment to its Major Planning Scheme Amendment No.4 – Morayfield South Emerging Community Area and Designated Bushfire Prone Areas.

The proposal is also a response to conditions set by the Queensland Government's State Interest Review, identifying four future State school sites for Morayfield South.

It also includes environmental corridors, new and upgraded roads, local centres, neighbourhood hubs, community facilities, open space, park and recreation areas.

“This is our City’s second largest growth front; expected to become home to around 26,000 people in the years ahead,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This amendment identifies important infrastructure and other community building factors needed to support growth in Morayfield South.

The second part of the amendment would ensure certain classes of new buildings in ‘Designated Bushfire Prone Areas’ meet the National Construction Code’s (NCC) bushfire safety standards.

“Currently our old Planning Scheme excludes land in General Residential, Township, Centre and Industry Zones from the 'Designated Bushfire Prone Areas',” the Mayor said.

“This means some residential buildings (Class 1-3 and 10a buildings) and other specific Class 9 buildings (such as health care, most education and residential care buildings), can currently be constructed in these zones without meeting the NCC safety requirements.

“It is important we update this. The amendment removes these exclusions to ensure resilience and public safety is improved when constructing these types of new buildings..”

Councillor Tony Latter (Div 12) thanked residents who took part in community Consultation late last year and made submissions.

“Everyone who made a submission will be notified and given clear information on how to access the Consultation Report, so they can see how Council has considered and responded to their feedback,” he said.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie will be asked to approve the proposed amendment.
