Plans for new $205 million sports centre

A $205 million state-of-the-art sports centre will be built in Moreton Bay as a key venue for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

The new Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will be built on land at The Mill at Moreton Bay, by Petrie Station and the University of the Sunshine Coast campus.

Announcing the project on-site today, Premier Stephen Miles said an independent panel had recommended it be bigger than originally planned.

Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will have 12 courts, across two halls, for sports including basketball, netball, boxing, volleyball, badminton, futsal, wheelchair rugby and pickleball.

There will also be a café, player change rooms, 302 car parks, offices and meeting rooms.

The centre is expected to create around 178 full-time jobs during construction and be open for public use before the 2032 Olympic Games.

Funding will come from the joint $1.87 billion Queensland-Commonwealth Minor Venues Program and a Project Validation Report has now been completed.

Expressions of interest for the Managing Contractor and Principal Consultant are expected to go out to market this month.

Appointments should be made in November for the Managing Contractor with construction taking place from 2026 and 2028.

“As we look to 2032, we push forward on the legacy opportunities here in our own backyard,” Premier Steven Miles said.

“This facility is earmarked to host the boxing events, will have 12 new courts and capacity for about 10,000 games goers come 2032.

“I want to thank the City of Moreton Bay Council for providing the land required to build this game-changing facility and supporting connections.”

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery described the fully-funded sports centre as a “positive endorsement of Moreton Bay, as Australia’s newest city”.

“Council is pleased there has been foresight to develop the two-hall, 12 multi-sport courts and we are proud to support this by providing the land and associated precinct works.

“The Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will provide long lasting benefits to our city and create a legacy all residents can be proud of for decades to come.”

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said the centre will be a “landmark sporting and community facility”.

“While we cheer on our Australian sporting heroes in Paris, we’re turning our sights to Brisbane 2032,” she said.

“We’re investing in the Games infrastructure that will expand the region’s capacity to host major events and leave a lasting sporting and community legacy for our nation.”

Queensland Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace added the venue will provide “important jobs and economic activity”.

“The new Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will be a prime 2032 Games venue and an outstanding asset for the Moreton Bay community before and after the Games,” she said.
