Region to host Queensland carnival first

The Moreton Bay Region is to stage the first women’s wheelchair basketball carnival in Queensland.

Suncoast Spinners are hosting the free one-day event at Morayfield Sports and Events Centre on Saturday March 27.

Paralympian and Suncoast Spinners President Bridie Kean will be competing to help mentor beginners and developing players.

For all ages

Bridie said the club offered social wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby sessions every week for people of all ages, with and without a disability.

There are currently no women’s wheelchair basketball competitions in this state.

“When people think of wheelchair sport, they sometimes assume it is only for those who use a wheelchair in their everyday life, but it can be fun for everyone,” she said.

“Even at an elite level, there are people with a disability and people with any disability playing these sports because of the unique challenges and competition opportunities they provide.”

Friday programs

Suncoast Spinners have a reverse inclusion initiative which encourages able-bodied women to play wheelchair sport, to increase participation numbers and grow competition.

Suncoast Spinners also runs programs at Morayfield Sports and Events Centre 298 Morayfield Rd, on Fridays from 6.30-8.30pm.
