Rylee and Josh lead way as pbs tumble at swimming titles

Redcliffe Leagues and Southern Cross Swimming Clubs had plenty to celebrate at the Brisbane Junior Short Course (SC) Championships in Chandler on Sunday.

Rylee Smith made the top 10 in all eight of her events becoming the Brisbane Junior SC Champion for a second successive year at 400m Freestyle, in a personal best (pb) time.

The 12-year-old Redcliffe swimmer was also runner-up in the 100m Individual Medley (IM) and 200m Freestyle, both in pbs and third in the 100m Backstroke and 200m IM.

Top ten

Josh McDonald, of Southern Cross, swam pbs and made the top 10 of all his races, including fifth in the 100m Freestyle with 1 minute 17.99 seconds, his fastest by almost five seconds.

The nine-year-old was seventh in the 100m IM in 1:31.39 minutes which beat his 1:39.45 by eight seconds, took five seconds off his 50m Butterfly pb and two seconds off his 50m Freestyle best.

Redcliffe’s Coco Kawasaki was in the top 20 for four of her five races in nine-year-old girls with four personal best times.

Personal bests

Team-mate Joshua Svennson was 21st in boys 10 year old 50m breaststroke in a pb.

Local swimmer Mara Hoefel was eighth in 50m Breaststroke for nine year girls, 13th for 50m backstroke and swam personal best times across her four races.

Also in action for Southern Cross were Alia De Leeuw, Alicia Ayala-Zessin Suly Ayala-Zessin, Josh McDonald, Hayden Rowling, Issah George, Spencer Harrold, and Zoe Wright.

Gold-en moment

This meet was for junior swimmers eight to 12 years. The Senior Brisbane Short Course Championships are this weekend (July 31-August 1) also at Chandler.

The meeting paused to watch the Olympic swimming finals with Brendan Smith taking bronze in the 400m IM, Jack McLoughlin silver in 400m freestyle and the Women's 4x100m Freestyle relay take gold in a world record time.
