Young volunteer makes Heroes final

Tristan Kolio, who was inspired to join Moreton Bay SES after the devastating floods of 2022, is a finalist in the 2024 QBANK Everyday Heroes Awards.

The Albany Creek resident, who grew up in Eatons Hill, is one of 23 finalists in the 10th annual awards which will be at the W Hotel Brisbane on Friday (October 11). 

They celebrate achievements of those in Queensland Police, Fire, Health, Ambulance, Corrections, Public Service, Education and volunteers.

Kolio has been recognised in the Excellence category for his commitment to the SES after just one year volunteering and for his drive to improve cultural awareness and educate his community.

The Moreton Bay City SES Unit Media and Engagement Co-ordinator joined the SES to help his community, while working full time in his own production company.

“When floods hit South-East Queensland in 2022, the whole Moreton Bay community and my own family took a hit,” said Kolio, who is based with Arana Hills SES Group.

“I wanted to help, but I was still young and there wasn’t much I could do.

“I looked into SES and put my name down straight away. Now in my second year it is the best decision I have ever made.

“The first point of contact is the most crucial part of the role. You may be serving people on the worst day of their lives, but the moment they see a person in orange, they feel relief.

“I find this is the most special part of the job, as you may never know the affect your role might play, even if it means you’re there to talk and listen.”

Kolio’s core focus is to create and manage media and content for the Moreton Bay SES Unit to share educational information to the public.

“As a member of the Volunteer Consultative Committee, I represent SES volunteers across the state and work closely with the Chief Officer to share experiences, give feedback, and ensure our voices are heard to drive positive change,” he said.

“I’m also passionate about diversity, as there aren’t many volunteers of Māori and Samoan descent.

“By sharing my Polynesian heritage and culture, I can support people of my cultures on jobs and encourage others to join.”

“Although I do not do this job for recognition, this nomination is truly a special part in the journey to ensure I keep doing what I am doing,” he said.

The six award categories are Achievement, Ownership, Dedication, Working Together, Excellence and the Young Everyday Hero Award.

Winners will receive $2000 in a QBANK account and $2000 donated to a charity of their choice.
