Amped for Rockin’ 4 the Homeless
Legendary Aussie guitarist Bob Spencer loves a ‘win, win’ situation and that’s how he describes Rockin’ 4 the Homeless (R4TH).
He’ll be joining the line-up at this Saturday’s event, playing with local band Team Utopia.
Spencer, best known for his work with The Angels, Skyhooks and Rose Tattoo, is excited to be returning to R4TH.
“I like win, win situations. That’s it in a nutshell. I like things where everybody can benefit. There’s something in this for everybody,” Bob says.
He says the performers benefit as do the crowd and The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe, which is why he’s happy to support it.
Spontaneous giving and encouraging others to support charity is something he’s done regularly since his wife died in 2009.
“I do this thing where I give things away on Facebook, it could be equipment, memorabilia or band T-Shirts. I’ve been doing that for a while,” he explains.
The gift is given on the condition that the recipient donates something to the homeless.
“I don’t care how much and don’t want to know about it. I choose the recipient with my eyes closed,” he says.
“It’s a win, win. I have these things cluttering up draws that I don’t use. I haven’t really thought about it, I’ve just done it for a long time.
“I’m happy to support Rockin 4 the Homeless however I’m reluctant to do much else because of what happened during COVID and the lack of support for musicians.”
What can the crowd expect from his performance?
“There will be no sword swallowing or breathing fire,” he says laughing.
“I approach every time I play the guitar as an opportunity to be the best musician I can be, the best Bob I can be.
“So far, it’s worked because people like to come to see my bands.”
He will be playing with Team Utopia, something he enjoys.
“It’s good fun. It’s not restrictive and I don’t spend a week at home learning complicated tunes,” he explains.
“I go through the songs at home, getting an idea of the arrangements, and at the gig fitting in with the band.
“I’m happy to be part of it. It’s good being part of something that’s a win, win. It’s a very worthwhile charity. I think we can all do more for people who are unable to get ahead.”
About Rockin’ 4 the Homeless
After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, Rockin’ 4 the Homeless is rebooting with an ‘entrée’ event this year, followed by the whole shebang in 2023.
It’s on November 5 at Thirsty Chiefs North Lakes.
The line-up includes Bob Spencer (formerly from The Angels, Rose Tattoo and Skyhooks), Diana Anaid, Team Utopia, Elba Lane, Black Whiskey, Tripsitta, Rhino, Levi X, and Northside Soul Sisters Choir.
There will be raffles and auctions as well as food vans.
All money from ticket sales will to The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe, which is raising money to buy a Sleep Bus.
With only 300 tickets available, the event is expected to sell out fast.
Doors open at 1pm, with an open mic from 2-4pm.
