Step up in youth health care

Youth mental health in the Moreton Bay Region and North Brisbane has been boosted by a new Youth Step Up Step Down (YSUSD) facility opening in the Caboolture.

The YSUSD provides short-stay services to people aged 16-21 who are unwell or in the early stages of recovery from an acute mental illness by offering additional assistance.

It follows the opening of a $5.4 million Mental Health Short Stay Unit at Caboolture Hospital three months ago for those needing urgent mental health treatment.

The YSUSD is available to existing users of the Metro North or Sunshine Coast mental health services and arranged following a case discussion with a patient’s treating team.

The purpose-built facility supports people, who may be far from home, family and friends, with their transition between acute and community health services

The building has six bedrooms, each with an ensuite. There is also a shared living space and common areas including a kitchen, dining, laundry, basketball court and gym.

The facility, at 88-90 King St, Caboolture, is a collaborative partnership between Metro North and Mind Australia.

A welcome from Metro North Mental Health Youth Step Up Step Down Team Leader Sharon Gordon

The short stay unit at Caboolture Hospital has eight bed areas, interview rooms and common areas to help those over 16 affected by acute mental illness in a safe, low stimulus environment.

The unit staff includes medical, nursing, allied health professionals and peer support workers, designing interventions and treatment plans to support people’s recovery efforts.
