Students put new skills to test

Students at the Australian Christian College (ACC) Moreton, in Caboolture, have been practising their new Chinese skills.

The Years 3-6 students took part in activities organised by Kaohsiung Municipal Ling Jhou Elementary School, which is visiting from Taiwan.

Education exchange events set up by the Taiwanese school included playing with the diabolo (an old Chinese yoyo!), wearing in traditional clothes, folk dancing, origami and arts and crafts.

ACC Moreton Chinese Teacher, Melody Gong said: “Having the exchange students visit for a day helps expand students' minds.

“Apart from me, it was a chance for them to speak to authentic Chinese speakers, experience the culture, and use the language they’ve learnt.

“This is the first year Chinese is being taught at ACC and Ms Gong said the cross-cultural exchange was valuable for both students.

“While the students from Kaohsiung Municipal Ling-Jhou Elementary School were only at the school for one day, there’s hope to expand the program from a one-day visit to a week-long exchange program.”
