Suburbs getting space to grow

Residents in Dakabin and Griffin may soon have their green space prayers answered by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Both suburbs are “under serviced for district play and recreational space,” says Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Division 7 Denise Sims, who is calling for change.

Griffin South is currently home to more than 6700 people and nearly 2000 families – many in townhouses and on small blocks - but it only has one small park.

Council’s Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) also says a four-hectare district park should be part of plans for Dakabin to meet current and future needs of the growing community.

Plans in motion

Having met the campaigning residents, Cr Sims took their concerns to last week’s general meeting of Moreton Bay Regional Council – with some success.

“I raised this motion to get council officers to work with development applicants to identify community space, before we lose the opportunity,” Cr Sims says.

“As soon as I met with residents, they requested improvements to their one and only park in Beverley Ct and I am pleased Council is now investing $150,000 to upgrade this facility.

“The fast pace of development has meant areas of Griffin and Dakabin are missing out on useable park space, as identified in our Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP).

“We need to ensure future generations have access to kick and throw spaces and areas need to be identified before they get swallowed up by further development.”

Cr Sims says in Division 7 there will be 18 park improvements and additions to the network this financial year.
