The Bee Babette buzzes into Anywhere Festival

Caboolture bee biologist is joining the lineup of talent at Anywhere Festival this year.

Kit Prendergast, also known as The Bee Babette, is turning up the heat at Hip Hops Brewers, with a blended show titled ‘The Birds and The Bees’, which is full of science, comedy and burlesque.

The passionate biologist’s career first blossomed due to her love of nature, evolution and ecology.

“I am an official bee biologist - I did my PhD on native bees at Curtin University, WA, under a Forrest Research Foundation scholarship,” Kit says.

“My PhD was looking at native bees in urban areas, pollination networks, and the impact of the introduced honeybee on native bees.

“I've since then been involved in all sorts of research projects and consultancy across Australia, have published over 50 academic papers, and just started a postdoc on canola pollination at UniSQ.”

The Birds and The Bees will be a show like no other.

“It is a comedy, with puns a plenty, giant memes on placards, and of course, lots of sexy science,” Kit explains.

“(Audiences) can expect titillating facts, hilarious anecdotes, audience interaction, and, for the first time since this show has been touring, a live aerials circus performance.

“It's a flirty, funny celebration of bees, and their roles in our lives.

“I love showing people that scientists can ‘bee’ themselves.

“We have this idea that science and arts are separate things - science is serious, arts is fun but frivolous. I love shaking that up, having fun, and getting in touch with my creative side whilst conveying some really hard-core science.”
