Just twelve months ago, the space beneath The Lakes College Multi-Purpose Hall was little more than a muddy undercroft.

Today, it has been transformed into a 1,000+ square metre performing arts and wellbeing precinct, purpose-built to inspire creativity, collaboration and student wellbeing.

The Lakes College community recently celebrated the official opening of its new Performing Arts Precinct and Gym, marking a significant milestone for the North Lakes school and its growing community.

The development forms Stage 2 of the College’s Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH), transforming the undercroft into a vibrant learning environment designed to support both creative expression and physical development.

Families, staff, students and special guests gathered for the celebration, enjoying student performances and the opportunity to explore the new facilities firsthand.

Built for creativity and collaboration

The Performing Arts Precinct provides a dedicated home for the College’s thriving arts programs, featuring a music classroom, seven music tutor rooms, an orchestra room, a recording studio connected to rehearsal spaces and tutor rooms, and a versatile dance and drama studio that can expand into a larger performance venue.

Principal of The Lakes College, Nicole Gregory, reflected on the significance of the development during the opening ceremony.

“This building is a testament to the passion, persistence and power of arts education at our College over the past 21 years,” Nicole said.

“Music, Drama, Dance, Media and Visual Arts have an extraordinary ability to engage, challenge and transform young people.”

From humble beginnings, where teachers and tutors created music, drama and dance opportunities wherever space could be found, the College now celebrates a purpose-built facility that brings together its growing arts community.

“It honours the hard work of the past while providing a platform for the present and the future,” Nicole said.

Students embrace the new space

Students have already embraced the new spaces, with many noting the opportunity for greater collaboration and creativity.

Year 12 student Grace said the new precinct has created an inspiring environment for students.

“I love the space - it’s a new creative area for everyone to enjoy. The old space was so cramped, and now we can all come together and collaborate,” she said.

Alongside the arts facilities, the new Gym will support Secondary HPE classes and enhance the College’s Athletics, Swimming and Dance programs.

Supporting wellbeing and growth

With purpose-built creative and wellbeing facilities now in place, The Lakes College continues its commitment to providing innovative learning environments that support the holistic development of students from Prep to Year 12.
