Turning back clock at $50m development

Work has started on a new $50 million development which will bring an iconic name back to one of Moreton Bay region’s busiest roads.

The Comiskey Group has begun construction of a new hotel, indoor sporting and recreation centre at 90 Gympie Rd, opposite Pine Rivers Park.

Set to open in early 2026, The Country Club Hotel will be a nod to the old Country Club Hotel which stood for decades just 500m down Gympie Rd.

Built in the 1950s and 1960s beside Council's offices, the old Country Club Hotel replaced the Clyde Hotel, before being demolished in the early 2000s.

It was also where Comiskey Group Director David Comiskey had his first job working in the venue’s liquor barn.

“The original Country Club Hotel was demolished about 15 to 20 years ago, but it stood for around 20 to 25 years before that,” Mr Comiskey said.

“Anyone from the area would know of it.

“We wanted to honour one of Strathpine’s most beloved past locals, which is why we’ve named the new venue The Country Club Hotel.

“It really is a full circle moment for me; from stocking shelves at the old Country Club to owning the hotel that commemorates it.”

The hotel will have many “pub” facilities including indoor and outdoor dining, bars and a gaming room, as well as an arcade room, eight-lane bowling alley, two pickleball courts, two virtual baseball simulators, four karaoke room, and two half-sized basketball courts.

It will also have a steakhouse, American barbecue pit, FoxSports on a huge HD screen in the American-style Sports Bar and live music on the beer garden’s stage.

“We want the hotel to be both a great, vibrant spot to catch up with friends and a place families can go for a memorable day out,” director Rob Comiskey said.

“My son is already itching to get into the arcade. I hope the community shares our excitement.”

Guzman Y Gomez are also set to open another of their Mexican food restaurants as part of the Gympie Rd site’s food precinct.

Strathpine is also where Paul Comiskey, father of David and Rob, built a squash centre, gym and indoor cricket facility in 1974 – and added Australia’s first indoor skate park in 1988.
