'Waylon will be back'
Deception Bay boxer Waylon Law is already planning his return to the ring just days after losing one of the biggest fights of his career.
Nicknamed The Outlaw, he was stopped in the final round of his IBF Super Lighterweight clash with Justin Frost at the Eatons Hill Hotel on Friday night.
It was the pair’s third successive bout - Law won the first on a split decision, Frost the second on a majority decision - and like those two, has been rated a contender for fight of the year.
Weight switch
But while 'Iceman' Frost now has the Asian/Oceania Super Lightweight belt and a top 15 IBF (International Boxing Federation) world ranking, Law is looking to switch weights and return by mid-year.
“Waylon will be back,” said Deception Bay Boxing Club coach Damian Smith, “but drop down a weight. He’ll keep going at lightweight.
“We’ve already got some good ideas for Waylon. His next fight will be on our club’s show at Redcliffe in June, or at Eatons Hill again in July.”
Knockout
Smith said the ringside doctor called a halt to Friday’s contest in the 10th round when law knew he needed a knockout to beat Frost.
“Waylon started well but got caught in the second round and went down,” said Smith, “then got caught again. By round five he was getting back into it, working the jab.
“Coming into the later rounds we knew the knockdowns would affect the scoring. Last round Waylon went for a knockout, but was stopped (himself).”
“The whole country is talking about the fight again and the respect the fighters showed for each other afterwards.”
Mr Entertainment
Law, who some on social media say should be called Mr Entertainment, was magnanimous in defeat telling B4 The Fight: “It was a great performance from myself and Justin.
“I jumped straight back up off the canvas, because I was very fit and I really tried, but the better man won tonight but I wish him all the best for the future.”
He also thanked friends, family and sponsors saying: “I’m so blessed to have everyone there to help me.”
Deception Bay boxer Hilary Collins will be in action against Connie Chan at Eatons Hill Hotel on March 27 in a welterweight contest.
