Wilson caught in “weighting” game

Liam Wilson and his team are looking for a path to a world title fight after Sunday’s scheduled ‘eliminator’ was cancelled.

Caboolture-based Wilson was due to fight American Stephen Fulton, a former world champion at two weights, on a No Limit Boxing promotion in Sydney.

But the fight, reported as an eliminator to face WBA super featherweight champion Anthony Cacace, was called off when Fulton failed to make the weight.

The fight was first set at 130lbs, but Fulton’s camp requested it be moved to 133lbs. Liam Wilson’s team agreed, but Fulton weighed in at 139.5lbs!

With Fulton more than six pounds over the limit, the fight was scrapped leaving Wilson and his team searching for alternatives.

Trainer Ben Harrington, who runs All Star Boxing in Lawnton where Wilson is based, said: “Why would you agree to 12 rounds at 130lbs and roll in at 139lbs?

“We all know what Liam would say, but I have a responsibility to him and his family. We’ve got to work out what we’re going to do.”

Wilson’s manager Glen Jennings added: “This feels like a stitch-up. If you sign a contract at 130lbs there’s an expectation you will deliver.

“It’s not only totally unacceptable, it is a blight on the sport. This is professional.”

This was the second successive fight Fulton has weighed in over the limit, though the first time was just by 2lbs and the bout status was changed.

Fulton is reported to have said on social media that the cancellation against Wilson was his fault but claims he did try to make the weight.
