Work finishes on high-crash road

Safety work costing $13.98 million has been completed on a 1.5km stretch of Samford Rd.

Work started in March 2024 to reduce the rate and severity of crashes between Lomandra Access Rd picnic area and Camp Mountain Rd.

It included road shoulder widening giving road users additional space, wide centre line treatment to separate through traffic and improving road surface drainage.

Also road resurfacing, additional guardrail, green infrastructure to improve fauna safety and improving the Camp Mountain Rd intersection closest to Ferny Grove.

“This stretch has a history of head-on and run-off road crashes with a high proportion of serious injuries,” Transport and Main Roads North Coast Regional Director Scott Whitaker said.

“A wider road with wider shoulders and wide centre lines will reduce crash risk by providing greater separation between opposing traffic flows and more space for road users to move off the road if required.

“The project also provided two fauna crossings within the project footprint, and an additional three fauna crossings and 11 short sections of fauna fence were also installed to the east of the project area.

“It will improve safety and ride quality for the 13,000 motorists who travel this busy road daily.”

The project was funded by the Queensland Government under the Targeted Road Safety Program.
