Yabbey Road fish and chips named Brisbane’s best in poll

Redcliffe locals and diners from afar have been won over by English-style fish and chips, complete with mushy peas.

Yabbey Road was named Brisbane’s best following an online poll conducted by The Courier-Mail and U on Sunday.

Alan and Kathy Bray opened up their Beatles-inspired shop around 4 years ago. It features a yellow submarine behind the front counter, memorabilia, music of the era playing, a life-size cutout of John Lennon and an Abby Road-style crossing out the front.

While decor certainly catches attention, it is the food that keeps people coming back.

They make all their own sauces, mushy peas, beetroot chutney for their burgers, their own batter, and crumb the seafood themselves.

“The one thing about our shop, and what we’ve done right from the beginning, is we make everything ourselves,” Kathy says.

“If you want the flavour, you have to come here, you can’t get it somewhere else. That is what really works for us. People say they love our sauces and our batter.

“We try to make everything possible gluten-free so everyone can share the (fish and chips) experience.”

And it seems their call for people to “give peas a chance” has been answered. They’re a hit. “We’ve converted a lot of people to the peas because it’s an English thing. Now, they come in for the peas,” Alan says with pride.

Since the news broke of their number one ranking, there's plenty more people coming in, with a steady stream of customers queued down the road for five hours in that first weekend.

The couple had head that the shop was nominated and made the top 10, however they were blown away in learning they had won.

“We nearly died. There’s so many good fish and chips shops out there,” Alan says.

“We wouldn’t have been more surprised if we won the Lotto. It was totally unexpected,” Kathy says.
