Leis Park | Lawnton

The ideal location to launch your kayak, canoe, or tinnie, Leis Park is a much-loved water recreation and picnic spot on the banks of the North Pine River. With the D’Aguilar ranges as a picturesque back drop it’s certainly a great way to relax on a Sunday afternoon.

It’s all about location

Situated between the Pine Rivers and under the train line bridges, Leis Park is easily accessible by vehicle from Gympie Road and Leis Parade in Lawton. Alternatively, you can ride or walk to the park via a network of local footpaths running from Sweeney Reserve, through Wylie Park and over the bridge.

Bring your picnic basket

There is no denying that the picnic areas at Leis Park have the most stunning vantage point of the river. With BBQ’s on site, shade cover and tables, all you need to bring along is the food!

A spot of colour

During Spring, Leis park, like many other parks around the Moreton Bay Region, bursts into a celebration of purple when the Jacaranda trees have their annual colour display. The park is also home to a variety of wildflowers, butterflies, bird life and is in close proximity to the Acclimatisation Society gardens heritage-listed botanic garden at Stephen Lawn Park.

Water fun on the river

Families and water enthusiasts can enjoy a day on the North Pine River, using Leis Park as the location to park and launch watercraft. This point along the river is be quite deep, with no area for shallow water play, so not ideal for small children who are not confident swimmers.

From Leis Park, you can paddle west towards North Pine Dam (Lake Samsonvale), or east towards the river mouth, which opens into the Moreton Bay.

Changing with the tide

Pine River is a tidal waterway and the boat ramp at Leis Park can become somewhat of a mud flat during low tide. To avoid a muddy launch, it’s always a good idea to check the tidal timetable before you depart. So whether you’re up for a morning of frolicking in the water, dropping in a fishing line, stroll by the river or a picturesque family picnic, Leis Park is spot worth further investigation.
