You’ll find plenty of waterholes scattered throughout the picturesque Moreton Bay hinterlands, perfect for getting a little wet in the wild on a hot and humid day. Escape from the city into our forested and rural bush land areas to discover these tucked away splash-tastic locations.

Rocky Hole

First on the hit list is Rocky Hole, an idyllic waterhole hotspot featuring a series of rock pools and incredible bushland. Situated in the Mount Mee area of D’Aguilar National Park, this swimming hole can only be accessed by 4WD, which is half the fun! Once the adventurous journey there is over, activity options at Rocky Hole are endless – there’s plenty of walking trails, lookouts, picnic spots and 4WD tracks to explore.

Bunya Swimming Hole

Make a splash at Bunya Swimming Hole — a hidden treasure tucked away in the quiet suburbs of the Hills District. Surrounded by spectacular scenery and wildlife, the swimming hole offers a perfect escape for a family day out, a paddle in the shallows with the kids, or a leisurely solo float on an inflatable.

Edward Allison Park

Located in the unassuming suburb of Eatons Hill on Eatons Crossing Road, lies the hidden gem of Edward Allison Park. This natural playground is home to a series of small swimming holes, ideal for hunting guppies and cooling off in the shallow waters.

Cedar Creek

For more off the beaten track places to visit in Queensland perfect for a summer’s day dip, take a drive out to the popular and picturesque, Cedar Creek in Samford. Surrounded by the bushland of Mt Glorious, Cedar Creek is perfect for exploring hinterland trails, rock hopping down the creek bed and splashing around in water holes. When visiting Cedar Creek, please be respectful of Private Property boundaries, do not trespass.

Travel the scenic route to the quaint hinterland town of Woodford.

If you’re coming from the direction of Brisbane, start your adventure in Dayboro and take Mount Mee Road towards Woodford. You’ll wind through wonderful, natural scenery full of breath-taking views of Mt Mee, an area abundant with history, culture, beautiful vistas and plenty of hinterland foodie delights.

Parks & Playgrounds

Once you’ve reached your destination, Woodford offers plenty of parks and playgrounds for the kids to stretch their legs and burn off some energy after the car ride. There’s even a Leopard AS1 Tank in the Woodford Memorial Park, making it a popular stop for those with an interest in military history.

Fill your Belly

If all the adventuring has left you famished, Woodford boasts an array of cafes, bakeries, pubs and restaurants, great for kicking back, relaxing and enjoying some good ole’ fashion country hospitality.

Life’s a Picnic

Make the most of the warm weather and rays of sunshine with a picnic in one of the region’s glorious parks, or pristine beaches perfect for kids. Gather your friends and family (or your pup for a doggy beach, or park trip) and prepare a basket of goodies for a relaxing lunch outdoors — don’t forget the sweet treats!

D’Aguilar National Park

During summer the hinterland is thriving with life bursting with lush greenery, gushing waterfalls and plenty of wildlife to catch your eye. Make the most of the picturesque surrounds and take a picnic to D’Aguilar National Park.

The Gantry is a fantastic spot for a BBQ lunch, or packed picnic amongst nature. While you’re there, explore one of the many walking tracks, or lay the picnic blanket down at Jolly’s Lookout, for an exceptional view of Moreton Island, the Glasshouse Mountains and Brisbane Valley.

Scarborough Beach, Scarborough

Scarborough Beach is the perfect location for a picnic by the bay, promising a great family day out this summer. With an electric BBQ, picnic tables, sheltered areas, a Pirate Park playground and even a basketball court, there’s something for everyone. Located right on the beachfront allows the kids to also enjoy a paddle in the gentle waters. Oh, and don’t forget to visit the Gollum Tree to leave a fairy wish!

Bullocky Rest, Joyner

For a scenic picnic location head to Joyner’s Bullocky Rest, overlooking Lake Samsonvale, for a BBQ or homemade lunch on the grass. With stunning views of Lake Samsonvale, Bullocky Rest has a children’s playground, BBQ’s, picnic tables and toilet facilities for visitors to utilise. We recommend an afternoon picnic for this one; Bullocky Rest is particularly beautiful at sunset!

Bongaree Beach, Bribie Island

Hosting a number of picnic tables, BBQ’s and shelters, Bongaree Beach is one of Bribie Island’s best beaches. It’s a prime location for an afternoon picnic by the sea. If you’d rather enjoy a relaxing day without the preparation, opt for lunch at one of the cafes, takeaway shops, grocery stores or even the ice-cream parlour for a sneaky dessert lunch.
