Bid to name Toorbul park ‘John Van Peype Park’

Moreton Bay City Council is proposing to honour local community member John Van Peype, pictured far right, by naming a park after him at Toorbul.

Mr Van Peype was a community advocate and volunteer in the Toorbul area until his death in 2012.

Moreton Bay City Council Mayor Peter Flannery is inviting the community to have their say on the proposal to name a park after Mr Van Peype before August 22.

“It’s really important we can honour members of the community that have served their local community and naming a park after a great man like John is a small way we can show appreciation,” Mayor Flannery says.

Valued contribution

Mr Van Peype volunteered much of his time and energy to others in the community.

“Mr Van Peype was one of the founding members of the Toorbul Rural Fire Brigade, Toorbul and Donnybrook Seniors Club and the Toorbul Fishing Club, where he dedicated decades of his life volunteering,” Mayor Flannery says.

Mr Van Peype was also a member of the Toorbul Progress Association in the 1970s and 1980s.

Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) agreed with the proposal to honour Mr Van Peype’s contribution.

“John assisted in raising funds for the community, clubs and the ambulance service. He was also a volunteer with the local fire brigade and gave much of himself for others,” Cr Savige says.

“John not only served our local community but also our country, and his name appears as an ex-serviceman at the ANZAC Cenotaph which he also helped build. He was truly an active and passionate community contributor.”

The specific area to be named, ‘John Van Peype Park’ is at 107 The Esplanade, Toorbul (Lot 105).

Council supports the proposal which is out for public consultation until August 22.

Non-supportive submissions through the consultation period will result in the proposal returning to Council for re-consideration.
