Car enthusiasts motor down to Woody Point for MG cruise
Published 4:00pm 5 April 2023
Around 60 MG car owners and enthusiasts gathered at Woody Point on Saturday to celebrate an important milestone and show off their pride and joys to the public.
Members of the MG Car Club of Queensland drove into town so they could retrace the same course from the 1936 RACQ Reliability Trail/Race around Woody Point - an event which consisted of 27 laps around a 2.65 mile course through the streets of Woody Point.
A special guest on the day was Roy McIlwain, whose father Noel McIlwain, raced a P-Type MG in the 1936 event.
Roy was invited by Keith Elwell-Gavins to take a ride in his MG P-Type - just like his dad’s - around the course.
During the ride, Roy also carried the “Team Prize”, which was a small Silver Ashtray, in his pocket.
The day was also held to celebrate the birthday of the marque’s founder Cecil Kimber (1898-1945) and the Centenary of MG, with the first cars being sold in mid-1923.
After a few laps of the course, all the MG owners gathered for lunch where they enjoyed an octagonal birthday cake in memory of Cecil.
