COVID-19: Masks are back from 1am

Wearing masks will be mandatory again in many public places throughout Queensland from 1am on Saturday (December 18).

The announcement was made this morning when Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the state had 20 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Brisbane North had five, Brisbane South eight, West Moreton one, Sunshine Coast two, Cairns two and Gold Coast two.

Four were overseas acquired and 16 in the community leaving Queensland currently with 82 active cases. Five are the Omicron strain of the virus.

Masks mandatory

As a result masks will be mandatory in shops, hospitals and aged care prisons, youth detention centres, on public transport, in rideshare vehicles and in airports and on planes.

These are places where unvaccinated people are mixing with those who have been vaccinated.

From today, clubs, pubs and other venues are for the vaccinated only. Masks are not required but are recommended.

“Everyone has probably seen the figures from New South Wales and Victoria ... quite concerning,” Minister D’Ath said, “2213 new cases in NSW and 1510 in Victoria.

Growing rapidly

“Knowing those cases are growing so rapidly and we have so many people coming from those states, makes it more important than ever that you come out and get vaccinated.

“The new rules started at 5am that going to cafes, pubs, clubs and hotels, museums, libraries run by the State Government, stadiums and other facilities, you have to be fully vaccinated.

“Not only checking in, but showing your vaccination.”

“Can I make it clear this is mandatory. If you are in the category that must have staff and patrons fully vaccinated, you don’t have the choice to opt out.”

“We have absolute confidence this will help us slow the spread of COVID in Queensland.”

Numbers will rise

Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said COVID cases were now being reported from “Cairns right down to Gold Coast” and this is “expected to continue”.

“The majority are Delta cases, have five confirmed omicron and this will increase. We know Omicron dominant and we will not be able to stop it. That is expected.

“The mask directive is to slow down the Omicron strain. Mask wearing is not just about protecting yourself it is about protecting others. It works both ways.”

The mask mandate will be revised once Queensland hit 90 per cent double dosed – the figure today was 83.07 per cent.

Those with one vaccination is 89.03 per cent, 19,479 vaccinations have been administered in the last 24 hours and 14,666 COVID tests conducted.

In addition to these current exposure venues in Queensland, public health units will also contact affected businesses and households directly for contact tracing purposes even when they are not listed here.

Contact categories and health advice

Close contacts

If you have been to a close contact location in Queensland at the relevant times, you are considered a close contact and must do the following:

  1. immediately travel by private transport directly to your home or accommodation and quarantine
  2. get tested at your earliest opportunity
  3. complete the online close contact form by clicking or tapping on the name for the relevant location in the table below. A pop up window will appear with specific advice for that location and a link to the form
    If you are unable to complete the contact tracing form please call 134 COVID (134 268)
  4. continue to quarantine even after receiving a negative result. After you complete the contact tracing form you will be contacted by Queensland Health
  5. continue to monitor for symptoms while you are quarantined. If you become symptomatic get tested and continue to quarantine. If you test positive, you will be contacted by Queensland Health.
  6. as you are a close contact:
    • you are required to quarantine for 14 days from the time you were at the venue.
    • anyone who resides at your home or accommodation is considered a secondary contact and must do the following:

      Secondary contacts

      1. immediately travel by private transport directly to your home or accommodation and quarantine as per the Management of Secondary Contacts Direction
      2. continue to monitor for symptoms while you are quarantined. You only need to get tested if:
        • you become symptomatic, then isolate until you receive a negative result
        • any of the people in the household test positive for COVID-19.
      3. quarantine until 14 days have passed since the close contact you live with in the same household had contact with the positive COVID-19 case or until you receive further instructions from Queensland Health or an emergency officer.

Note: Secondary contacts who are required to quarantine for 14 days under the Management of Secondary Contacts Direction can fill in a form to obtain written documentation they may require for their employer or to support a claim for financial assistance with Services Australia.

Casual contacts

If you have been to a casual contact location at the relevant times, you are considered a casual contact and must do the following:

  1. immediately travel by private transport directly to your home or accommodation and quarantine
  2. get tested at your earliest opportunity
  3. continue to quarantine until you receive a negative result
  4. continue to monitor for symptoms, if you become symptomatic get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result.

Low risk contacts

If you have been to a low risk contact location at the relevant times, you are considered a low risk contact and must do the following:

  1. get tested at your earliest convenience but you do not need to quarantine until you receive a negative test result
  2. continue to monitor for symptoms, if you become symptomatic get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result.

If you are no longer in Queensland please check with the relevant state health department for health advice and requirements.
