COVID-19 update: Four new cases
Words by Kylie Knight

There have been four new cases of COVID-19 detected in Queensland in the past 24 hours, of which three are the result of community transmission but are close contacts of existing cases. It comes as residents settle in to the first full day of lockdown.

One is the brother of the Prince Charles Hospital administration worker, another is a close contact of someone from the Portuguese restaurant cluster, and the third is a co-crew member of the Virgin Airlines crew member.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says all are considered low risk at this stage.

Dr Young says the brother of the Prince Charles Hospital worker attended a school holiday tennis camp at Shaw Park Tennis Centre, Wooloowin, on Monday and contact tracing is underway.

The case connected to the Portuguese restaurant cluster was in quarantine during the infectious period, but is it not yet clear if the Virgin co-crew member had been out and about while infectious. Queensland Health is working through that now.

Queensland now has 42 active cases. More than 18,000 people were tested yesterday and more than 16,000 vaccinated.

Health Minister and State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D'Ath says Queensland could run out of Pfizer vaccines by next Monday unless additional supply is provided by the Federal Government.

She says the Director-General requested an additional 152,100 doses yesterday and this request has been denied.

Ms D'Ath says Queensland is expecting 64,500 doses per week during the month of July but it will not be enough to do much more than second doses.

"I am disappointed we have been denied any extra vaccine despite the reasons we have given and despite the fact that we'll start running out of vaccines. I would welcome the Commonwealth telling us exactly how much vaccine they currently have in stock," she says.

Call to cap arrivals

The Premier and Deputy Premier are again calling for the Federal Government to restrict unnecessary travel to and from Australia after it was confirmed the Prince Charles worker contracted the Delta strain of the virus from a 'regular, unvaccinated traveller.

"The person who brought the virus in was a regular traveller, not a vulnerable Australian returning home, a regular traveller who was unvaccinated," Ms Palaszczuk says.

"I honestly think we need a serious discussion about ensuring people are vaccinated coming into this country. We have to minimise the risk. We are in a pressure cooker moment."

She says regional quarantine is also key to minimising the risk and a facility at Toowoomba could have been built by now.

Lockdown – what you need to know

Lockdown started at 6pm yesterday and will run until 6pm on Friday, with the situation to be reviewed on Friday morning. It applies to 11 local government areas (LGAs) in South East Queensland, Townsville, Magnetic Island and Palm Island.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says people can only leave their homes for four reasons. They are:

  • Essential education and work that can’t be done at home.
  • Health care, including vaccination
  • Essential shopping and care of a vulnerable family member
  • Exercise with one person (not from your family) outdoors

Gyms, cinemas, entertainment venues and places of worship are closed.

Only 20 people are permitted at funerals, 10 at weddings (with no singing or dancing). No more than two people are permitted to visit your home.

If you left one of the 11 local government areas locked down before 6pm yesterday, you must abide by these restrictions even if you’re outside the lockdown area.

Restaurants and cafes can offer takeaway and home delivery only.

Exposure sites

If you have been to any of the following venues at the times specified, contact Queensland Health, get tested and isolate immediately. Monitor the Queensland Health website for the growing number of possible exposure sites. We will update this list as more come to hand.

Close contacts

If you have been to one of these locations in Queensland at the relevant times you must do the following:

  1. immediately travel by private transport directly to your home or accommodation and quarantine
  2. get tested at your earliest opportunity
  3. complete the online contact tracing form by clicking on the name for the relevant location in the table below. A pop up window will appear with specific advice for that location and a link to the form.
If you are unable to complete the contact tracing form please call 134 COVID (134 268).
  4. continue to quarantine even after receiving a negative result. After you complete the contact tracing form you will be contacted by Queensland Health.

If you are no longer in Queensland please check with the relevant state health department for health advice and requirements.

Dolphins battered in Battle for Brisbane

An already depleted Dolphins side is likely to be without Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow for a few weeks after he suffered a hamstring injury in tonight’s Battle for Brisbane. Head Coach Wayne Bennett says to ‘trust me, we’ll deal with it’ as the squad prepares for a trip to Darwin next week
