Dining Gems in Dayboro Revealed

The Old Storehouse, Dayboro

Susan Volz says she went out on a limb when she decided to open a deli at Dayboro, hoping other residents shared her yearning for gourmet cheese and antipasto.

“I love deli fare and there was nothing here, so I travelled to get it and I thought I can’t be the only loonie doing it’,” Susan says.

In April of last year, she opened the doors to The Old Storehouse, creating a homely atmosphere and making everything on site, including cakes, chutneys and relishes. Her sister Michelle Smith is the chef and her apprentice is Susan 's daughter Emily.

“We make things with love and I think that comes through. We’re all positive about what we do and it shows,” Susan says.

Mill Creek Cafe, Dayboro

In its time, this building in Dayboro has been home to countless businesses and even residents, but these days, the aroma of coffee fills its halls.

Chris Harper, owner of Mill Creek Cafe, says the 1920s building was a tea house before it opened its business in 2016. Many locals call it the old chemist shop but it was also a bootmaker, a dress shop and a lot of cafes and restaurants.

The experienced chef says the location is perfect for his business, and he loves the township and its people.

“The food we do is something that people can connect with, but we do it with a twist,” Chris says.

Eggs Benedict is served with hash browns instead of toast, and their big breakfast is served on a burger. And that coffee you smell as you walk in? It’s Campos coffee.

“Residents like to share stories about the house,” Chris says.

“We’re really lucky. It’s such a nice town. The locals are amazing,” he says.
