Extra lanes for traffic bottleneck
Anzac Avenue is to get two extra lanes through part of Kippa-Ring to try and reduce traffic congestion and improve safety.
Construction is due to start this month on building a third lane, both ways on the stretch from Klingner Rd to Nathan Rd. It is likely to finish mid-to-late 2021.
The project will involve:
- Turning the two-lane sections into three lanes each way
- Adding a third right-turn lane from Klingner Rd on to Anzac Ave
- Moving the pedestrian crossing by Hercules Rd State School and making the median waiting area larger
- Losing some on-street parking to make way for the new pedestrian crossing
- Installing new traffic signals at the intersection of Anzac Ave, Regency St and Mandin St plus a new pedestrian crossing
- Moving the bus stops by Hercules Road State School away from the construction area and replacing them when the work is complete.
The project is being done by Winslow Constructors on behalf of Stockland as part of the Stockland Newport development.
Paul Pickering, Principal of Hercules Road State School, said the school had been consulted by the contractor about the work who had sought feedback.
Mr Pickering says the school “welcomed any improvement to the congested road and supported the suggested work, recognising improvements in safety for the school community and in particular the children”.
Safety first
He also “recognises the level of inconvenience, over a relatively short period, was manageable for the long-term gain for improved road safety”.
Mr Pickering says he asked if car parking was part of the plan but was told it was not.
During construction there will be barriers and traffic control measures. Speed through the area is likely to be reduced to 40km/h at times.
Some trees will be removed to create the additional lanes. There will be tree planting and landscaping when the work is completed.
Most work will be done between 7pm and 5am. Work during the day will mostly be outside the current road to reduce impact on traffic and pedestrians.
