Fire ant expert to reveal all at forum

Want to learn more about the fire ant eradication program? A free community education forum will be held this week, with an expert from the Invasive Species Council sharing what he knows.

The free forum, titled Talking About Fire Ants Invasive Species Part 2, will be held at Deception Bay Environmental Hub on October 16 from 7-9pm.

It is part of a series of environmental education events which is a collaboration between Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), Redcliffe Environmental Forum (REF) and the University of Sunshine Coast (UniSC).

Invasive Species Council Queensland-based Advocacy Manager Reece Pianta will be the guest speaker.

The organisation advocates for the eradication of fire ants in Australia, highlighting their devastating impact on native wildlife, human health and the economy.

It says fire ants, native to South America, are a major threat to ecosystems and agriculture, potentially causing billions in damage annually if not eradicated.

The council is urging governments to commit the necessary funding and resources for a comprehensive eradication program, which is currently being managed by state governments with national support.

Reece’s work for the Invasive Species Council has helped secure funding and build community support for Australia’s fire ant eradication program.

He was also involved in the early formation of Yellow Crazy Ant eradication efforts in Townsville.

Visits to infestation areas in Cairns and Townsville, and living in the Brisbane fire ant biosecurity zone left a deep appreciation of the mounting impacts that little invaders have on every aspect of life.
