Flood of praise for Deputy Mayor Denise Sims

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery has praised the work of Deputy Mayor Denise Sims, who officially resigned from Council this morning.

Ms Sims’ resignation to CEO Greg Chemello followed an emotional video posted on social media last night outlining her intention to resign.

“It is my duty to advise the Chamber today that our CEO has received a resignation letter from our Deputy Mayor Cr Denise Sims,” Mayor Flannery said.

“I want to comment on her remarkable personal and professional journey over the past five years, because I think we can all learn something from the humility she brought to this leadership role.

“The transparency and accountability reforms we’re enacting were driven by her.”

Mayor Flannery says Ms Sims was instrumental in Council livestreaming its meetings thanks to her commitment to ensuring the community has greater understanding of our decision-making processes.

“We are all richer for it, especially our community.

“Politics is a tough game and in the end there are only two ways all of us will leave this place - either at a time of our own choosing, or when the community votes you out.

“I’m pleased for Cr Sims that she was able to make this decision at a time of her own choosing so that she could be with her family.

“On behalf of the Council and this region, I thank her for her service.”

Thanks for service

Following Ms Sims’ announcement last night, residents flooded social media with comments thanking for her service and praise her contribution to the community.

Mindy Hollamby said people were proud of everything Ms Sims accomplished for the community.

“It has been an inspiration to see such a kind-hearted and passionate woman in this role. I wish you the very best for your future,” Ms Hollamby said.

Gaye Murphy praised Ms Sims for her selfless service.

“Your contribution too improving the region was greatly appreciated. May your journey to health be one that fills you with hope once again.”

Writing on behalf of the Steam Museum at Old Petrie Town, Bill Ives thanked Ms Sims for her support, while Karen Haddock said her kind heart and passion for the area would be sorely missed.

It was a sentiment echoed by Kerry Skillington.

“From a Kallangur Scouts perspective, I cannot thank you enough for what you have done,” Ms Skillington said.

Yvonne Warnick said: “Denise you are not my elected representative, but I want to tell you how much I respect you and your unfailing energy and enthusiasm for your ward and MBRC”, while Fiona Chowdhury said Ms Sims’ lobbying for new facilities benefitted the community.

“Because of you Denise, my boys get to enjoy the privilege of having their own basketball court in the part right next to our house,” she said.

“Since it’s been there, I’ve witnessed so many children and families use it.”

Council will vote today to elect a new Deputy Mayor.

A council spokesman said the CEO would notify the Electoral Commission of Queensland of the need for a by-election. It is understood this will have to be held within two months.

In the meantime, neighbouring Councillors Jodie Shipway (Div 4) and Mick Gillam (Div 8) will represent and action the concerns of residents in Division 7.
