A number of freaks will be bringing their weird and wacky talents to Moreton Bay this month for one night of jaw-dropping entertainment.

Following sold out shows in Melbourne, the cast of The World’s Greatest Freakshow will be dropping by the Bribie Island Hotel on Thursday, September 8 as part of the second leg of their inaugural tour.

Speaking to Moreton Daily, Creative Director Elizabeth Dawson-Smith - who goes by the stage name Miss Friby - said the show is so weird that you won’t want to look, but at the same time you can’t look away.

“As a theatrical genre, the show is basically people doing stunts that involve their own body,” Elizabeth said.

“As an audience member, you will see lots of stunts that are generally quite dangerous and that shouldn’t be tried at home.

“Unlike magic and illusions, what you see is what you get, and there will be plenty of moments where you might be screaming out “don’t do it” and at other times “do it”.

“You can’t help looking at what the performers will do, even if at times you feel like you want to look away.”

Inspired by the Hollywood Blockbuster The Greatest Showman, The World’s Greatest Freakshow features their own epic ensemble who perform stunts that defy the imagination.

“The idea for The Greatest Freakshow was born out of COVID when one of our co-founders Darren Sutton became obsessed with the movie The Greatest Showman,” Elizabeth explained.

“He watched it copious amounts of times.

“Darren has been in the entertainment industry for a long time and he wanted to create his own unique act, so he cast the net far and wide and found five completely unique performers and put them all together in the one show.”

Meet the performers

“In total, we have a cast of five people who are part of The Greatest Freakshow,” Elizabeth said.

“We have The Great Gordo Gamsby – known as the World’s Strangest Showman - who has the world record for the world’s strongest tongue, which he demonstrates throughout his unique act.

“He holds multiple Guiness World Records, and only a couple of days ago he set another for record for slicing 30 apples from his mouth with a chainsaw in one minute.

“He also sticks things through his nose that then comes out of his mouth.”

The cast also includes internationally renowned contortionist Samora Squid, the glass-eating/body stapling certified freak Aleksandra The Great, and Sian Brigid, who happens to like dancing on glass and laying on nails, amongst other hair-raising tricks.

“There will also be lots of cabaret, dancing, music and good-old fashioned entertainment,” Elizabeth said.

Going big on a global scale

While The Greatest Freakshow is an Aussie-made production, it is becoming well known on a global stage thanks to a recent residency in Las Vegas.

“We had the show running in Vegas for a month, which once again was full of unique performers who came from that region,” Elizabeth said.

“The majority of the shows all sold out, and the show is likely to return again in another few months.”

A show like no other

Elizabeth is encouraging the Moreton Bay community to head along and check out the show, stating “you haven’t seen anything like this before”.

“Life is short, and Netflix can only do so much for the human spirit,” she said.

“This is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to see a very interesting selection of artists in the one place at the one time, as we come from all over Australia.

“This will be a show you will never, ever forget.”
