The countdown is on to this year’s EKKA, and Redcliffe Show Society’s Barbara Mapp is doing her bit as an honorary council steward.

Agricultural shows are in her blood and her contribution has been recognised with a Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service to Queensland Shows.

The award was presented at a function to celebrate the opening of this year’s Redcliffe Show on June 24 and follows a nomination by Joanne Frawley.

Barbara was humbled and honoured to receive the award.

“It is the second time this award has gone to Redcliffe with mum, Lorraine Fisher BEM, receiving the first in 1990 and now myself,” she says.

“I was very proud to receive it.”

In her nomination, Joanne said: “Barbara’s compassion and professionalism to make the Redcliffe Show one of the most outstanding shows in Queensland is a true credit to her”.

“Barbara was the Secretary for the Redcliffe Show for 40 years, ran the Champion Dog Show, seeking major sponsors and businesses throughout those years. Barbara brought in the Prep Program for the local school students with over 300 children attending.

“In 2012 Barbara started the School Bands (initiative and) they performed regularly at the show. She introduced the Music Festival which performed on a Sunday.

“Barbara also ran the School Section of the Redcliffe Show which is the largest. Her relationships with this diverse group are why the Redcliffe Show has been and is still a huge success.”
