Kurt's cafe wins top national award

A Burpengary café, open for less than a year, has been recognised alongside some of the nation’s best restaurants in the Australian Good Food Guide’s 2023 Awards.

Voted in by local residents and foodies, Project Salubrious has won the AGFG Readers’ Choice for Gluten Free dining.

Based at the Absorbent Minds complex at 143 Rowley Rd, Project Salubrious opened in July 2022 and has drawn diners from as far as Hervey Bay and northern NSW.

The cafe is free from dairy and grains (except for with coffee) and uses local suppliers such as Basilea Living Herbs in Burpengary and the Mini Farm Project at Samford.

Chef and owner Kurt Lovell never intended his cafe to be known as a ‘gluten-free’ venue and is blown away by how the community has embraced it.

“We just believe in serving quality, delicious food that leaves people feeling good,” he said, “it being gluten-free is only one element.

“But we’ve been overwhelmed by people thanking us for creating an experience where they can choose anything from the menu.

“Then there are the ones who say they ‘don’t usually like gluten-free food’ but we’ve changed their perspective. So to be recognised in this way is just amazing.”

The Australian Good Food Guide Readers' Choice results were determined by data throughout the previous calendar year.

Project Salubrious has recently launched cooking classes with Kurt, with more events to come. The café is open 7am-2.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
