Library has craft all stitched up
A resurgence in interest in all things handmade has inspired the latest “borrowable” offering at Redcliffe Library.
In a first for the region, three new sewing machines and an overlocker are available for people to use within the branch – although they can’t be taken home.
Redcliffe Library Branch Leader Margot Keane says the sewing machines, installed in June, have proven immensely popular with patrons.
“There’s a lot more interest in crafting and being more sustainable with your clothing,” Margot says.
“There’s a genuine interest in people wanting to create their own garments.
Sharing knowledge
“It’s been something that’s been in the planning stages for quite a long time and we’ve had quite a lot of interest.
“There’s been a mix of people, from experienced sewers to raw beginners.”
The sewing studio is open for four-hour blocks and sewers can book a time within that window.
“We’ve had multiple people working at the same time and sharing their knowledge,” Margot says.
Before patrons can book a machine to use, they have to undergo an induction to ensure they’re familiar with its programs and Margot says the library hopes to introduce beginners’ classes soon.
“At the moment it’s only at Redcliffe, but we’re looking at ongoing sewing projects throughout the region,” she says.
The induction covers machine threading and the basics of the machines’ programs, sewing straight lines and using zig-zag stitching, as well as curved lines.
Classes, including making a tote bag, are already scheduled for the Sewing Studio.
