MBRIT shares exciting tourism plans with operators
Words by Ashleigh Howarth

Tourism operators who create a variety of unique experiences for visitors to the Moreton Bay Region gathered at Sunny’s Margate this week to attend a networking event by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism.

The event gave local operators the opportunity to connect, create partnerships and share their knowledge with one another to encourage visitors to stay longer.

MBRIT has been working collaboratively with Council and has been tasked to ensure Moreton Bay is a must-see destination.

The work will include mentoring and helping tourism operators in a post-COVID world, while also delivering a massive events program for people of all ages to enjoy.

MBRIT CEO Shane Newcombe says there are many great events coming up that will attract visitors, which will have flow-on benefits for many tourism operators.

“The four major events we are delivering is the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run, Redcliffe Kite Fest, Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival and Tastes of Moreton Bay,” Shane Says.

“Those are two major food and agribusiness events we have been working tirelessly on, and we are looking at expanding them.

“Also, we host events not seen anywhere else – the Redcliffe Kite Fest is the largest kite festival in the Southern Hemisphere; The Abbey Medieval Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the southern hemisphere; and the Woodford Folk Festival is the largest festival of its type in the southern hemisphere.

“We are positioning ourselves to be Australia’s event capital.

“We are putting this into various markets – not only our own drive market, but also in the southern states, and we are now positioning ourselves for international travel and opportunities.”

MBRIT is also expanding the number of community events that are held throughout the region, making it easier for locals and tourists to attend in their own neighbourhoods.

“We were delivering 23 events per year, and we are now delivering 58,” Shane says.

“We are running a whole lot of new and smaller localised events.

“Council, through their Moreton Say, have really identified that communities are looking for those smaller events, such as music in the park, movies in the park, picnic in the park events in their local parks, where on a Saturday afternoon they can walk down with the kids and have a cool community event.”
