Fifty-four current and former City of Moreton Bay personnel have been recognised for their efforts during the devastating February 2022 floods.
The recipients, including Mayor Peter Flannery and Councillor Matt Constance, were awarded the National Emergency Medal or Clasp at a ceremony at North Lakes Community Centre.
The medals recognise significant or sustained service during nationally recognised emergencies, from frontline assistance and community support to leadership and emergency coordination.
The February 2022 floods affected thousands of residents across the City of Moreton Bay, with council teams working around the clock to support evacuations, coordinate recovery efforts and help communities access critical information and assistance.
During the emergency, 224 council roads were closed and 1000 tonnes of sand was used to fill 80,000 sandbags. The floods caused more than $270 million in damage to homes, businesses and other private property, as well as more than $14 million in damage to council assets.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the medals recognised the dedication of those who helped the community through one of its most challenging emergencies.
“These medals recognise the hard work and dedication of our people, and the countless hours spent over the flood period supporting and protecting the Moreton Bay community during an incredibly challenging time,” he said.
“The National Emergency Medal recognise significant service during major emergencies, whether that is on the frontline or through the coordination, leadership and support that happens behind the scenes.
“These medals are a reminder of the professionalism and dedication of the people who step up when our community needs them most and the importance of being prepared for future weather events.”
Cr Constance, who chairs the Local Disaster Coordination Centre, was also among the recipients.
