Motorists contest parking fines in court

Twelve people have chosen to appear in court rather than pay parking fines issued by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

They were fined for a variety of infringements, including stopping on a path, dividing or nature strip, painted or traffic island; stopping on a yellow line and stopping contrary to a ‘no stopping’ sign.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Community and Environmental Services Director Bill Halpin said the people had chosen to contest the fines in court rather than pay.

“People are parking unlawfully and certainly blatantly contrary to signs and yellow lines,” Mr Halpin told the February 15 Council meeting.

|“In some instances it’s a situation where people are pulling up and parking on the footpaths, actually across the concrete pathway.|

“So children with bicycles, mums with prams, are having to navigate around the vehicle, walking out onto the bitumen in order to get around the vehicle.”

The fines were issued between June and December last year and the matters will be heard at a date to be set.
