Plans for 52 new “short-term accommodation” cabins on Bribie Island have been given the green light.

Moreton Bay City Councillors have unanimously backed Bribie Island Hotel’s development proposal at Sylvan Beach Esp.

The cabins – each on 27sqm with a queen-size bed and single bed - will be on the current car park, which will reduce from 218 to 172 spaces.

Reports with the development application say the cabins will attract a “range of demographics including … families, travellers and tourists”.

Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) said: “There was a lot of chatter in my community around this. We know we have a lack of short-term accommodation in the area.

“While there are questions over whether this is the best way to deliver it, it certainly will be helpful for the community (knowing) we are not going to see a shortening or lessening of people coming here.

“If anything, we are going to see more, so we need to meet that demand. It is a fantastic venue. I’m not surprised people would be wanting to stay here.

“I understand we have made some improvements from the initial application which I am very pleased about.”

Initial plans also included a purpose-built live music venue, but that was removed from the application.
