New market fosters community spirit

A new market launching at Lawnton this weekend aims to deliver a weekly event filled with joy and community spirit.

Convenor Sharni Fisher, who previously ran the Strathpine Flea Market, says the Lawnton Community Market will bring together old favourites alongside new stallholders.

“Last year stall holders had it pretty tough with COVID and this year we’ve moved it to the Lawnton Tavern and we’re starting afresh,” Sharni explains.

“It’s about the community coming together, it’s really exciting.

“The tavern has been amazing.”

Sharni says there are about 50 stall sites available at the new venue and almost 40 stallholders have signed up for the first market.

“We’ve got fresh produce, gemstones, flowers, plants, a trash ’n’ treasure lane, clothing, toys, tools and an ice cream truck and coffee van – we’re hoping for some other food trucks too,” she says.

“The majority of the stallholders are individuals who need an outlet to be able to sell their products.”

There will be a DJ at the first event and Sharni’s keen to hear from local performers who would also like to take part.

“It’s an opportunity for everyone to have a positive, happy space.”

As well as hosting paying stallholders who help cover the cost of rental at the tavern, Sharni plans to offer a space at each market to a local charity.

“Any charity can have one market a year where they can come and have a free stall,” she says.

The Lawnton Community Markets will be held every Saturday from 6am-noon at the Lawnton Tavern. For stall inquiries email [email protected].
