Moreton Bay City Council is commissioning two murals for landmark buildings at Brendale and Deception Bay during the 2023-24 financial year.

Artists are being urged to apply to leave their mark on the exterior walls of South Pine Indoor Sports Complex and Deception Bay Library.

Expressions of interest are open now and close on September 11, 2023.

Council wants the mural at South Pine Indoor Sports Complex to have “broad appeal to the diversity of peoples, sporting codes and cultures who are site users”.

The mural at Deception Bay Library will need to have “broad appeal to the diversity of people who visit the library, cafés and shops and locals and visitors who come to enjoy the water, bayside parks and walkways”.

The Art At Large program supports the city’s creative sector by providing opportunities to create art on Council-owned assets including buildings, footpaths and other infrastructure.

This is the second year the mural program has run. Murals completed in 2022-2023 can be viewed via this link: Murals - City of Moreton Bay

A Council spokeswoman says the chosen artists will facilitate a free creative community workshop that connects with the mural site.

At these workshops, the public can meet the successful mural artist and learn about their creative practice as well as participate in a fun hands-on creative activity designed by the artist.

Residents attending will be encouraged to share memories about the buildings and the artist will consider these while developing their ideas for the mural.

Via Councillor newsletters in July, the public was also invited to present their ideas about what the sites mean to them. These responses and consultation with stakeholders informed the EOI.
