Sam Short, the former Albany Creek Swimming Club member, will be racing for gold in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Short, the 2023 world champion now at Rackley, qualified for the men's 400m freestyle final from heat four with the fifth fastest time of 3 minutes 44.88 seconds.

The Bunya resident, who also holds the fifth fastest time ever 3:40.68, led from the second length of his heat.

But, on the final turn Brazilian Guilherme Costa attacked and finished half a second ahead in 3 minutes 44.23 seconds.

Short will be joined by Australian team-mate Elijah Winnington in tomorrow’s final which starts at 4.42am (AEST).

Winnington was fourth fastest qualifier just 0.01 faster than Short, but behind Germany’s Lukas Maertens 3:44.13, Costa and Fei Liwei of China, 3:44.60.

Stingers start

Charlize Andrews and Alice Williams, the North Brisbane Polo Bears players, will line-up for the Australian Stingers' opening match in Pool B of the water polo, at 4.05am.

Both have starred for the Albany Creek-based club. Andrews went to St Paul’s School at Bald Hills. Williams played professionally in Italy last year.

Hockeyroos' opener

Tomorrow night Renee Taylor, the former Redcliffe Hockey Club junior, will be in the Hockeyroos’ line-up for their first match of the Olympics.

Australia takes on South Africa in Pool B of their competition at 8.45pm (AEST).
