Park plan tribute for Ken Hatchman

One of Moreton Bay’s unsung community heroes is set to have a park named after him.

Moreton Bay City Councillors have unanimously supported plans to rename an area of Mango Hill - Ken Hatchman Park.

Council will open the parkland naming plans for 28 days to allow public submissions.

The proposed Ken Hatchman Park runs along the west side of Chelmsford Rd and across to Discovery Dr, just before Douglas Circuit.

A naming board is also suggested saying: “Ken Hatchman Park - His tireless community service and educational mentorship have profoundly enriched the region and inspired a legacy of unity and generosity in our neighbourhood.”

Mr Hatchman said he was “really surprised” at the proposal to name such a “large park” area in his name.

The Mango Hill resident was a primary school teacher, specialising in science, at schools in Kallangur, Mt Isa, Straphine, Dakabin and Burpengary.

Mr Hatchman was a member of Pine Rivers Apex Club for decades and is a long-standing member of Mango Hill Progress Association. He is a life member of both.

“It’s people like Ken that make our communities,” Deputy Mayor Jodie Shipway said.

“I first met Ken in 2019, on a 39-degree day, when we were collecting for the Christmas hampers in the original part of Mango Hill - and he outlasted me.

“On behalf of the community I want to say thank you to Ken. I think this is a great acknowledgment of his work in the area.”

Cr Yvonne Barlow said Mr Hatchman's legacy is “selfless service, educational mentorship, and community advancement”, making him a “deserving namesake for the proposed parkland in Mango Hill”.

“He is a dedicated educator who has left a lasting impression on generations, with students, now adults, still referring to him respectfully as Mr Hatchman,” she said.

Council’s tribute said Mr Hatchman’s “commitment to education extends beyond the classroom, as he has played a pivotal role in shaping the community's values around learning and personal development.

“Beyond his professional career, Ken Hatchman's volunteer work stands as a testament to his character.

“His leadership and coordination of the Annual Mango Hill Christmas Hamper Collection program demonstrate his compassion and drive to support those in need, ensuring that the spirit of giving is alive and well in Mango Hill.

“Ken Hatchman's legacy is one of selfless service, educational mentorship, and community advancement, making him a deserving namesake for the proposed parkland in Mango Hill.”
