Three from three for Sam

Sam Short has done it again! This morning he won a third gold medal for Australia at the Commonwealth Games - and is chasing two more.

Short, the former Albany Creek swimmer, won the first Commonwealth 800m freestyle, leading from the front to win by seven seconds.

The Bunya resident stopped the clock at 7 minutes 39.81 seconds, ahead of team-mates Ben Goedemans 7:46.49 and Matthew Galea 7:47.10.

Short now has 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay gold medals - with the 1500m and 200m freestyle events to come.

Liam Adcock, the former Redcliffe State High School student, has qualified for the Commonwealth Games long jump final.

On his Games debut, Adcock was fifth in Group B and 11th overall in the long jump qualifying last night posting a best of 7.74m.

The top six from each group go into the 12-man final where Jamaican Tajay Gayle, who won Group B with 8.10m, will be favourite.

Adcock, who was also a member of Redcliffe Little Athletics, jumped well early season, posting 8.20m, but has reportedly been struggling with a niggling injury recently.

However, he will be hoping to rediscover the form which helped him win a Diamond League meeting last year and medal at the World Indoor Championships.

The long jump final in Glasgow is at 4.24am tomorrow.

Tonight, All Star Boxing’s Jye Dixon will step into the ring to face Bangladesh’s Md Rakib Hossain in the 55kgs quarter-finals.

Both sailed through their Round of 16 fights with unanimous 5-0 verdicts from judges. The fight is at 10.45pm AEST.

Kirralee Hayes, the founding member of Genesis Aquatic at Bray Park, starts her bid for a second medal of the Games tonight.

Hayes is in the second of the women’s 50m freestyle S13 heats at 9.23pm AEST looking to match or beat her bronze medal in the same event at Birmingham 2022.

The final is at 4.12am AEST tomorrow morning.
