Sam Short has given Moreton Bay its first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games - just 24 hours after Kirralee Hayes won bronze.

The former Albany Creek swimmer from Bunya dominated the 400m freestyle this morning in Glasgow.

Short, 22, led from the first turn and never let the gold medal out of his grasp, finishing in 3 minutes 41.25 seconds.

Four seconds behind was team-mate Elijah Winnington in 3:45:46 with fellow Aussie Ben Goedemans third in 3:45.57.

“I didn’t realise this morning after the heats I was going to be first event tonight,” Short told Channel 7.

“There was a footy game on locally that made traffic a nightmare so really had to roll with the punches and happy to get that good swim out.”

Short said he’s “getting used” to keep his composure when out in front, but prefers to “have it that way for a championship”.

It is the first of five events Short is listed to race in Glasgow, with the 200m, 800m, 1500m and 4x200m freestyle relay to come.

The 800m freestyle heats start tomorrow evening AEST with the final in the early hours of Tuesday.

Kirralee Hayes, a founding member of Genesis Aquatic in Bray Park, won Moreton Bay’s first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Twelve months after returning to swimming, following a two-year break, Hayes won bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle S13.

The 22-year-old from Deception Bay finished in 1 minute 4.42 seconds, just 0.12 off second place and behind fellow Dolphin Jenna Jones 1:03.89.

Hayes had looked comfortable in the heat, on Friday night AEST, finishing fourth in 1:05.24 for a better lane draw in the final.

She now has matching Commonwealth bronze medals having finished third in the 50m freestyle S13 at the Birmingham Games in 2022.

Brendale resident Jye Dixon will start his boxing program at 9.15pm AEST tonight when he steps into the Glasgow ring.

Dixon, from All Star Boxing in Lawnton, had a bye in the round of 32 but faces Mathealeria Seholoholo from the African nation of Lesotho.

Seholoholo is 14 years older than Dixon, but the 21-year-old had had seven weeks of competition and training camps en route to Scotland.
