Golden Sam, Jye impresses

It’s two down, three to go for Sam Short, while Jye Dixon has put down an impressive marker at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Bunya resident Short, who won the 400m freestyle gold on Sunday, helped Australia’s 4x200m freestyle relay team to victory this morning.

The Aussies swept through the heats, winning in 7 minutes 8.66 seconds before breaking the Games record with 7:01.47 seconds in the final.

Short, a former Albany Creek swimmer, was on the first leg clocking 1:45.16 seconds before Harrison Turner, Tom Dean and Ed Sommerville reeled in England and took gold.

The 22-year-old will be back in the pool this evening for the 800m freestyle heats, with the final in the early hours tomorrow AEST.

All Star Boxing’s Jye Dixon has made a winning start to his Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old Brendale resident cruised past Mathealeria Seholoholo, from Lesotho, in the Round of 16 - with a unanimous 5-0 verdict from judges.

Dixon is now through to the quarter-finals where he will face Bangladesh boxer Md Rakib Hossain who also had a 5-0 win in his first bout.

There’s little information about Hossain online, but Dixon is among the favourites in this division and will be confident.

Former Redcliffe resident and student Liam Adcock begins his quest for Commonwealth Games gold tonight.

Adock will be in the long jump qualifying round looking to use it as a springboard for the final early on Wednesday morning.

There’s little online showing Hossain’s boxing record, but Dixon will be confident entering the fight at 10.45pm AEST tomorrow.
