Setting sail for our WinterBash icebreaker

Sailors from south to central Queensland, Toowoomba and New South Wales are heading to Woody Point for the WinterBash regatta.

The seventh annual WinterBash, run by Humpybong Yacht Club on July 30-31 on the waters off Moreton Bay Region, is a key event for sailors making an early start to the 2022-23 season.

Humpybong president, Ryan McLaughlin said WinterBash was one of the few winter regattas for off-the-beach catamaran and dinghy sailors.

“Sailors really appreciate the 20 degree C temperatures on Moreton Bay in winter in ideal weather for sailing,” Mr McLoughlin said.

Biggest fleet

“We are really hoping that our biggest fleet of 151 boats is exceeded this year.”

WinterBash consists of the Three Can Bash, three back-to-back races on a triangular course on Bramble Bay on the Saturday (July 30).

Then WinterBash Marathon over courses set by division between Woody Point, Shorncliffe Jetty and Deception Bay on the Sunday (July 31).

“WinterBash is a key event of the sailing calendar marking the start of preparations for the 2022-23 season. It is an opportunity for skippers and their crews to refresh and refine their skills in preparation for the Spring and Summer racing calendar.”

Register now

Registrations are already flowing in for senior and junior fleets with large numbers expected for the latter.

Mr McLoughlin said WinterBash is a good opportunity for sailors to keep their fitness, competitive edge and skills up to date.

He urged those who haven’t yet registered to do so to help the club with catering, logistics and volunteer numbers for start, safety and other on water marshalling craft.

Overnight camping and use of club facilities will be available to competitors and families. Hot and cold food will be available from the canteen during the event.
