Young First Nations designers have been chosen to lead the finale to this year’s Bribie Island Nature Festival (October 9-11).
Yarunyung: The Next Wave - a “vibrant collection of First Nations creativity, culture and connection to place” - will be presented on October 11.
The new collection, called Yarunyung to honour the traditional name for Bribie Island/Yarun, features streetwear shaped by designers aged 12-21.
Inspired by the landscapes, stories and spirit of Yarun (Bribie), Yarunyung will bring contemporary wearable fashion, music and digital art together.
Each garment is described as a “statement of self-expression” and the collection was warmly received by more than 500 people at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, in July.
It was produced through a combined partnership of Bribie Island Nature Festival, the jarjums (young people) of Pumicestone Indigenous Education and Employment Council (PIEEC) and the Elders on Yarun.
The collection also builds on the Canvas to Catwalk - a creative collaboration between Bribie Island Nature Festival and PIEEC.
The project culminated in a Fashion Showcase to open the 2024 Festival and then an invitation for PIEEC to showcase the designs in Cairns this year.
With support from Festivals Australia, the fashion event at Bribie Island Nature Festival will feature the young designers modelling their own designs.
They will be accompanied by live music from Muses Trio and a VJ projecting images of Bribie Island on screen.
Yarunyung: The Next Wave can be seen Sunday, October 11 at the Bribie Island Recreation Hall.
