Students reaching for the stars

An innovative program at Redcliffe State High School aims to maximise the achievements of all students.

Implemented several years ago, the Academic Intervention and Response (AIR) program builds on the school’s strong academic culture and is based on the belief all students are capable of succeeding academically if they are given the time, support and opportunity.

An adjusted timetable on Fridays creates “AIR time”, allowing teaching staff to provide additional support to students to help them achieve and extend their content knowledge or skills.

AIR time gives each faculty the opportunity to host an intervention, re-teach or run an enrichment event to expand on classroom content.

Building confidence

Students have the chance to work with teachers to clarify concepts or extend their expertise and some receive additional support with homework and literacy because their subject choices mean they can’t access the school’s junior Literacy Support classes.

As part of the AIR program, short courses in numeracy and literacy have been developed and implemented to deliver strategies to build confidence and success in the classroom.

Senior students are supported with special attention for those who need assistance attaining their Queensland Certificate of Education.

Students who may have been absent for an examination complete it this during AIR time to reduce the chance of missing further class work.
