Stage two of The Lakes College Aquatic Precinct is now complete, with young swimmers enjoying the new facilities during a Family Fun Event last week.

The second stage completes the precinct, which was opened in September 2022, with stage one comprising an eight-lane 25m heated outdoor swimming pool, a kiosk and amenities with changerooms, showers and toilets.
Stage two essentially doubles the precinct’s footprint, with a dedicated 20m indoor, heated learn-to-swim pool; shaded grandstand adjacent to the existing outdoor pool with seating for 500 spectators; all-abilities access from the carpark; spacious amenities and office space.
There is person-with-disability access into pools and amenities at both areas.
TLC Learn to Swim Aquatics Manager Sue Mayo is delighted with how the completed centre has come together.
“The process was always a first and second stage process. The first stage was the creation of the 25m, eight-lane outdoor pool for students and squad swimmers to use all year round. The indoor pool enables access for vital learn-to-swim lessons for our younger students and everyone in our community,” Sue explains.
“Stage two allows us to create a continued path of the swimming journey, from babies through learn-to-swim and then squad swimmers.
“Stage two is where a love of learning to swim commences and continues for not only fitness but fun and competitive swimming. Everyone is part of our swimming club.”
Sue says the school community has been supportive and excited about the facility “where body and mind are brought together at each lesson”.
“Our Term 4 Swim Program has received fantastic feedback from teachers, student and parents who hear all about the fun around the dinner table. The first of our Learn to Swim assessments and lessons have commenced also. It was so exciting to be able to use the new Learn to Swim pool,” she says.
“We have been overwhelmed with the response by the broader community. Our philosophy is to focus on the needs of the child allowing them to engage in a program where it incorporates rich language, creating curiosity and whole-body movement.”
The Learn-to-Swim program will cater to babies from three-months-old with its gentle 'Welcome to Water' sessions through to adults, and even offer stroke technique training for advanced swimmers.
“Our swim instructors encourage every child to succeed in every lesson. There are so many more benefits to learning to swim than water safety and skill for life,” Sue explains.
“Research shows swimming makes you smarter, with children ahead of their milestones anything up to 18 months. It also increases confidence, physical health language skills and independence. We would love to meet you and your child and meet our amazing team.”
The Learn to Swim program is now open and assessments will continue throughout the year for those wanting to sign up. A welcome pack is on offer for those who do.
