Day 12 Rolling Coverage
Cameron Smith leads the medal charge for our local Olympians today, with the leaders in his sights. Bronwen Knox is also hoping for a big finish to the pool round of the water polo. We'll have live updates on both right here.
Water Polo – Bronwen Knox
9.54pm: Australia moves into the quarter finals of the women's water polo at the Tokyo Olympics after a 14-1 win over South Africa tonight.
In a game Australia was expected to win easily, the South African team kept the score to just 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. It seems they saved their best performance for their final game of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
The Aussie Stingers shifted up a gear in the second quarter, widening the gap to 7-1- by half-time.
By the end of the third quarter, the Aussies were in front 11-1, scoring three more in the fourth quarter.
There were no goals to fgour-time Olympian Bronwen Knox who started playing at Albany Creek Leisure Centre for North Brisbane Polo Bears 20 years ago and still represents the club.
The goal scorers for the Stingers were: Zoe Arancini (2), Amy Ridge (2), Lena Mihailovic (2), Rowie Webster, Bronte Halligan (2), Elle Armit, Keesja Gofers (2), Abby Andrews and Hannah Buckling.
The Aussie Stingers have a day off tomorrow before the quarter finals start on Tuesday from 3pm.
Golf - Cameron Smith
6pm: So close! So, so close for Cameron Smith, whose career began at Wantima Country Club in Brendale.
The 27-year-old who grew up in Bray Park, hit eight birdies in his final round of five under par 66 and he was briefly in the battle for bronze.
But a dropped shot at the final hole left him with a four-round total of 270 (71, 67, 66, 66) and 14 under par.
That was just one shot short of the seven players who finished joint third and went into a play-off for the bronze medal.
Xander Schauffele, from the US, took the gold with an 18 under par 266 total, followed by Rory Sabbatini, representing Slovakia, who shot a remarkable final round 61 (Olympic record 10 under par) to snatch silver with 267.
CT Pan, of Taiwan, won a seven-man play-off for the bronzed medal after they all finished on 15 under par.
Swimming - Kaylee McKeown
1.30pm: Another gold for Redcliffe-born Kaylee McKeown, this time as part of Australia's triumphant 4x100m Medley relay team which also set an Olympic record.
McKeown, Chelsea Hodges, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell came from behind to take the gold in 3 minutes 51.60 seconds, a fraction ahead o the US on 3:51.73. Canada won bronze in 3:52.60.
It not only gave McKeown a third gold of the Games it also made this the most successful Olympic by an Australia swimming team.
Earlier this weekend, McKeown, 20, had won the individual 100m Backstroke crown and then the 200m Backstroke. She is the first Australian to win the latter.
What a week for the former junior swimmer at Australian Crawl in Burpengary!
